Introduction
The Zoo-Oid Corporation is an artistic collective placed under the direction of PJ Maravala and Jonathan Grieve directors of Para Active. The Vision of Zoo-oid is to ask a question about the nature of Art where depth, verticality, technical ability, elite and autocratic ways of working meet breadth of knowledge, diversity, inclusion and more horizontal and democratic ways of working. The question is: What happens when those aspects are pushed to the extreme. There is a volatile nature to this exploration that causes conflict. The other important aspect to this is a question of ownership of ones image and how far, in our normal social and political context we are allowed to take the multiplicity of images and ideas that are projected on us and own them for ourselves. Ultimately it is a question of power and who is allowed to have it. The two inspirations for this project are Jerzy Grotowski, who has elucidated a very clear conception of the nature and value of Verticality in Art & most importantly Guillermo Gomez-Pena who, we believe, is the most forward thinking artist in the area of issues of cultural diversity: his work with his group La Pochanostra embodies a vision of Horizontality that we believe is unsurpassed. These two artists represent two very conflicting artistic positions. Our work in The Zoo-oid Corporation is to bring these positions into a meeting in order to discover what emerges.
